Frequently Asked Questions

When should I plan my adventure?

We organize tours and you can rent our motorcycles all year round as South Africa’s weather does not present major hurdles regardless of the season. South Africa is situated in the Southern hemisphere. Its seasons are the opposite of the Northern hemisphere. It has winter in July and summer over Christmas. In winter, temperatures in certain areas can drop to 0°C at night and temperatures during the day should be between 15°C and 26°C often with a bright sunny day.

One of South Africa’s major highlights – which is more than twice the size of France – resides in its great divertisty of scenery and ecosystems.

  • Towards the center of the country, you will find high plains called the Highveld – up to 1800m. The sky is a bright blue and the light is incredible. Summers are warmer and the Highveld is famous for it’s afternoon thundershowers.
  • A little lower towards the country of Lesotho, the are becomes more mountainous. Summers are hot and often quite wet. Winters are very cold and often you will see snow (with temperatures as low as – 15°C and with passes at over 3000m high).
  • Towards the North East, the climate is hot and dry.
  • Towards the East, the climate is hot and humid.
  • On the South Coast (facing the Indian Ocean), the climate is hot and humid all year round with very temperate winters. The ocean’s temperature rarely goes below 22°C, even in winter.
  • Towards the North in the western part of South Africa and towards Namibia, it’s quite arid and desert like. The ocean is cold and fog is common in winter.
  • Towards the Cape area the summers are quite warm ranging from 25°C to the mid 30°C with multiple days of strong wind. Winter is its rainy season and is quite cold.

Why come to South Africa and to this part of Africa?

In addition to South Africa’s great diversity of scenery and ecosystems, it has a rich history that contribute to making its culture so unique. Food is very varied and of excellent quality most notably the meats, the fruits and vegetables as well as the seafood from the Western Cape. South Africa also has a strong wine culture, with a cluster of spectacular wineries in the Cape, even if beer remains one of the alcoholic drinks of choice.

As a rider, one can find a variety of terrain in order to take full advantage of the proposed terrain and test your riding skills. Also, the activities spectrum is limitless in order to make your travel even more rewarding.

Neighbouring countries also offer their fair share of scenery, great diversity and welcoming locals. As in South Africa, the road is an invitation to multiple surprises and interesting encounters.

Can you book my flight ticket?

We do not sell or book plane tickets. Every rider must take care of this on his/her end either directly with an airline or through a travel agency. We can however give you some advice in order to help you with your flight arrangements.

It is highly recommended to be on site at least one day prior to your planned departure at least for our mid to long tours in order to meet up with the other riders, the guides, and to prepare / check your riding equipments, etc.

Which documents do I need in order to travel to South Africa and other neighbouring countries?

Passport : you will need a valid passport with at a minimum of 3 months of remaining validity upon your return and you will need to have a minimum of 2 empty pages in your passport.

International Driver’s licence : it is not absolutely mandatory to have one but regardless, we advise that you obtain one prior to departure should you not be holding a South African driver’s licence.

Visas : For South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya – you should be able to get your visa upon arrival in the relevant country. We invite you to check current regulations well before your departure date. For Mozambique, you will most likely have to address consular formalities from your country of origin.

Yellow Fever certificate: Should you cross a border from South Africa and have recently travelled in another or multiple African countries, you will need to arrange for a yellow fever vaccine upon which you will receive a yellow fever certificate.

What do I need to know regarding health issues?

Malaria: In South Africa, risks are limited in most regions but exist in the Provinces of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Kwazulu Natal. Should you be travelling to these destinations, you may choose to procure the adequate malaria preventative treatment. In neighbouring countries, malaria risks are higher and it is highly recommended that you opt to procure the adequate malaria preventative treatment.

Yellow Fever: Should you cross a border from South Africa and have recently travelled in another or multiple African countries, you will need to arrange for a yellow fever vaccine upon which you will receive a yellow fever certificate.

Other diseases or viruses: we invite you to contact your in-country medical professional in order to find out what the current travel / medical recommendations are as well as obtain potential guidance and extra vaccines that you may need.

Intestine troubles: It is not impossible that you may experience a certain level of intestinal issues. It is advised to bring relevant medication as a preventative measure.

Water: Bottled water is readily available. Tap water, especially in South Africa, is of very acceptable quality. With that said, if you do need to drink tap water, in some areas it is recommended to boil it first or use disinfectant tablets.

Hospitals: Hospitals & clinics are present mostly in the more urban areas. There are also small medical centers in the more rural areas.

Do I need to get personal insurance?

This is entirely your decision to make. If you feel more comfortable with one, you should be able to obtain a travel and/or personal insurance – whether it be private or other – in your country of origin. Prices and inclusions vary.

What can I do if I don’t have a motorcycle riding licence?

Don’t worry. You’re welcome to travel in our support vehicle. A specific fee will be applicable. This is a great way for your friends and family to take part in the adventure. 1 to 2 persons per tour.

What riding equipment do I need?

We advise that you bring your own equipment for your journey. As needed, we can rent it to you or indicate specialized stores where you might get it before departure.

The necessary riding equipment are: a helmet, bottles, a jacket (ideally with removable sleeves), pants (ideally motorcycle ones), gloves (2 pairs recommended) are amongst the fundamentals. Given that these are usually for a very personal use, it is recommended to bring your own. You can however rent or we’ll help you find what you need.

Luggage wise – the golden rule is to reduce by half what you were initially planning to take with you.

The little extras that make sense are: a good headlamp, riding socks, or at least sports or hiking ones, sunglasses, solar cream, liquid soap, baby powder for your boots and gloves, and a means to take photos.

It is also interesting to get upon your arrival in South Africa or in neighbouring a local pre-paid SIM card in order to avoid possibly costly roaming charges.

Upon arrival at Johannesburg airport, what is the plan?

For our tours, one of our guides will pick you up at the Johannesburg airport (or at any other airport in the Gauteng province) and will take you to the booked hotel or guesthouse.

For rentals, we can organize your transfer either from the Johannesburg airports to your hotel or directly to our premises for a flat fee of 30€ (600R).

If you are already in South Africa and wherever you might be within a 30km radius of Sandton – we can pick you up for the same flat fee as above.

Can I modify/cancel a tour or a rental booking?

As much as we can, we will bend over backwards in order to meet your expectations should you wish to add more days, more activities or even modify the route, etc. This may lead to extra costs that will be clearly outlined and validated by you.

You can cancel a tour or a rental. Cancellation fees will apply (see terms & conditions section)
